Whether you live in a big city or are just driving through, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the many “bad drivers.” Are you just being overly critical or having a bad day? Probably not.
There are many cities where bad drivers are more prevalent than others, which can result in an astounding amount of car accidents.
How Does Your City Rank?
Car accidents are often caused by drivers who are distracted, aggressive, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Accidents can also occur during inclement weather, such as rain or snow, when many drivers seem to “forget” how to drive.
Car accidents can happen anywhere, but are more likely to happen in heavily populated areas as opposed to smaller towns. Allstate Insurance, who makes an annual list of the “America’s Best Drivers Report,” picks cities based on various statistical data, including the amount of time between accidents.
This report lists the best, and worst, cities in which to drive, based on the frequency of collisions. The purpose of the “worst list” is to encourage people to change the way they drive and focus on accident prevention. If you want to live in a “safe driving” city you don’t necessarily need to move. Instead, try changing the way you drive.
Did Your City Make the “Worst City for Car Accidents” List?
Residents across the country have a great deal of pride in their towns and cities. As soon as a place makes a “worst” list it is perceived as a personal insult. In terms of this particular list, residents can and should feel motivated to think about the way they drive and change any dangerous behaviors that could cause a car accident.
If every driver made an effort to change they way they drive, a “worst” city could make the “best” list in no time. Here are some cities that could show some improvement:
In this city of over 600,000 residents and more than 18 million tourists visiting each year, it’s not surprising that car accidents happen often. On average, drivers in Washington, D.C. crash every 4.8 years (the national average is a car accident every 10 years). Additionally, D.C. residents are 107.3 % more likely to have an accident than the national average.
It’s hard to say for sure what causes all the accidents, but traffic congestion, out-of-towners, and distracted driving are possible causes for the increased rate.
San Francisco, CA:
San Francisco is an eclectic city known for many tourist attractions, but it is also a danger to drivers. Maybe this is due to the heavy fog that hangs over the Golden Gate bridge or the large population of more than 800,000 people.
Drivers average an accident every 6.5 years and are about 60% more likely than the national average to be involved in a crash.
Despite the various modes of transportation throughout this city of over one million residents, the average driver has a car accident every 6 years.
Philadelphia drivers are approximately 60% more likely to be involved in an accident that the average US driver.
Everyone has heard of Miami, but not many have heard of this city of 200,000 just north of Miami. Hialeah ranked high on the list of being one of the worst cities for car accidents because Hialeah drivers, on average, have one accident every 5.6 years.
Just about an hour away from another city notorious for car accidents, Washington, DC, drivers in Baltimore get an accident every 5.4 years (in comparison to the 10 year average). These unlucky drivers are 88% more likely to be involved in a car accident.
Keep Your City Off of the “Worst List”
You don’t need to live in a big city to have a car accident, and even if you do live in a highly populated area, the greater probability does not necessarily have to translate into an accident. If you have an accident, here are tips on mistakes to avoid after that accident.
Most accidents are preventable, and only sometimes unavoidable. The best way to avoid a car accident in a city with high rates of accidents is to drive responsibly and stay focused and alert at all times.
