Attica,
New York is one of the
best kept secrets of the famed Fingerlake region of
NY. Named for a region in Greece, it is located
in beautiful Wyoming County, NY. A haven for
outdoor sports through all four seasons, Attica offers
fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, swimming, golfing,
mountain biking, and a full range of camping
facilities for singles or family enjoyment. The
most famous of these campgrounds is Letchworth
Park, "The Grand Canyon
of the East".The
Attica Rodeo was voted #1 by the Cowboys and Cowgirls
of the American Professional Rodeo Association.
For 48 years, each Rodeo has gotten bigger and better;
now one of the most professional in the world, it is a
far cry from when the 1st rodeo 2nd row seating was on
the roofs of attendees cars and the food stand
consisted of a leaky shed roof.
Attica
residents (population 6,028 in 2000) and
visitors have a full range of local cultural
activities available to them. Attica Area
Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Gazebo in the Park
Summer Concert Series, Golf Tournaments, and Founder's
Day festivities yearly. The Arts
Council for Wyoming County
sponsors many cultural activities such as a Film
Series and a Folk
Arts Program , as
well as providing grants and sponsoring contests for
local artists. The famed Celtic music
group, Kilbrannan,
is based in Attica.
Local NY
history, early 1900's artifacts, early maps, prison
history, and extensive genealogy files are found at
the Attica Historical Society. The Stevens Memorial
Library, founded in 1893 also offers research
opportunities on the community and the pioneer Stevens
family
Attica
is known for its maple trees, exporting pure maple
syrup, maple cream and maple sugar. A strong and
stable economy is provided by local industry such as
the Attica Lumber Company, tourism and the Attica
Prison. A tragic footnote to American history,
was the Attica prison
riot of 1971. Many documentaries have been
produced about this event, as well as a major
Hollywood movie.
Tonawanda
Creek passes through Attica on its way to the Niagara
River. It is also part of the Erie
Canal. Attica is rich in natural beauty, and
its residents and visitors enjoy it to the fullest.
